II. Pharmacological properties

7. Pharmacotherapeutic group: Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin and its analogs).

Vitamin B12 refers to water-soluble vitamins of group B. A characteristic chemical feature of the molecule of cyanocobalamin is the presence in it of the cobalt and cyano group forming the coordination complex. In the body, cyanocobalamin is converted into a coenzyme form – adenosyl cobalamin, which is an active form of vitamin B12. Cyanocobalamin is the growth factor necessary for normal hematopoiesis and ripening of erythrocytes; participates in the synthesis of labile methyl groups and in the formation of choline, methionine, creatine, nucleic acids; promotes the accumulation in erythrocytes of compounds containing sulfhydryl groups. Has a beneficial effect on the function of the liver and nervous system. Cyanocobalamin activates the blood clotting system: in high doses it causes an increase in thromboplastic activity and prothrombin activity. Vitamin B12 improves the acid-base balance of the body, increases the total protein content in the blood serum, increases the number of gamma globulins, stimulates the production of antibodies. The drug promotes the growth and development of animals. With intramuscular injection, cyanocobalamin quickly enters the bloodstream. Most of the vitamin within 24 hours is excreted from the body with urine. With intravenous administration, the half-life of cyanocobalamin is between 20 and 50 minutes.

Vitamin B12 for injection according to the classification of GOST 12.1.007-76 refers to substances of 4 hazard classes – low-hazard substances. The drug in recommended doses is not toxic for warm-blooded animals.

III. The order of application

9. Contraindications: hypersensitivity, hypercoagulation (including acute thrombosis), erythremia, erythrocytosis.

10. The drug is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly 1-2 times a day in the following doses (per animal):

μg of vitamin B12

ml of the drug

Piglets – weanling

Dogs up to 5 kg and cats

Dogs from 5 to 15 kg

Dogs over 15 kg

Doses and duration of Vitamin B12 use depend on the weight of the animal and the course of the disease.

11. Symptoms of overdose with the use of the drug in accordance with the instructions for use are not revealed.

12. Features of the drug at the beginning of application or its cancellation is not established.

13. Failure to comply with the recommended interval with repeated administration of the drug may lead to a decrease in its effectiveness. If you skip the next dose of the drug, its use is resumed as soon as possible in the same dosage and according to the same scheme.

14. At recommended doses, Vitamin B12 for injection does not cause side effects and complications in animals.

15. Vitamin B12 is incompatible with ascorbic acid, heavy metal salts (inactivation of cyanocobalamin), thiamine bromide, pyridoxine, riboflavin (because the cobalt ion contained in the cyanocobalamin molecule destroys other vitamins). Vitamin B12 increases the development of allergic reactions caused by thiamine. You can not combine with drugs that increase blood coagulability.

16. Livestock products during and after use of Vitamin B12 for injection are used without restrictions.

IV. Personal prevention measures
